ABOVE

-The perfect substitute for ABOVE is over when we are using the preposition ABOVE with the meaning “higher than”.

There was an emerald above the bevelled mirror.

A hot air balloon ascended above the clouds.

-We will not interchange them if we are referring to an “upper level”:

He has established an encampment 3.000 meters above sea level.

He has established an encampment 3.000 meters over sea level.

-We will use above not only in order to refer to a higher location but also figuratively or metaphorically speaking:

I had no idea you were a so talented musician, your concert was above expected.

Here acquires the sense that he performed better than expected.

It can also acquire the sense of something hard for someone to understand, as in the next example:

Unfortunately Chemistry is all rather above me.

Chemistry is too difficult to understand for me.

-Can also be used to refer to something previously mentioned (this is also known as a premodifier use).

As we can see from the above diagrams, the percentage of bilingual speakers is increasing year after year.

We are using here above to refer to a diagrams expressed previously in the report.

MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN USING “ABOVE”…

Above is only used when there is no contact between stated things, persons or locations. If there is some type of contact we will replace it with “over”.

I put my jacket above my shirt.

As there is direct contact between the jacket and the shirt we will replace it with over.

I put my jacket over my shirt.

We will also use “over” and not “above” when numbers are involved in text.

You are not allowed to enter in this local unless you are over 21.

As well “only” as “below” can post modify a noun.

Noisy neighbours above were heard two floors below.

As you can see both are a complement to the nouns. They are providing an extra information.
