The use of "all" as a determiner

El uso de "all" como determinante

Different uses for ALL

When used as a determiner, “all” will be placed following the next structure when preceding a head noun:

Before article, demonstrative or possessive  preceding a head noun.

All the pretty horses.

All those files.

All your problems.

And preceding directly before numerals.

All five chairs.

Will deserve special attention time expressions like: all day, all night, all week, all month…

They do not demand the definite article. All the same, the definite article will be allowed with or without “of”:

I danced all evening at the club.

I danced all the evening at the club.

I danced all of the evening at the club.

Most common mistakes to avoid…

-When we are talking about people will be much better use everyone or everybody than “all people”

*Remember that we will use EVERYONE when we are referring to each individual as part of a group. Whereas EVERYBODY refers to the group as a whole acting as a singular body.

Everybody is looking for something.        All people is looking for something.

If we are going to use ALL in order to refer to an entire class of things or people, then we will no use articles.

All cows eat legumes.           All the cows eat legumes.

Now that you are acquainted with the use of ALL as a determiner, I encourage you to carry on with the use of “ALL as pronoun”.
