“Used
to / Be used to” and expressions of typicality
The first question that usually
comes into your mind when you are studying both expressions is,
Are they similar? Are they perfect substitutes?
The answer is no.
Used to + verb is used for habits
and states which happened in the past but are not having continuation in the
present.
We use this verbal form only
in past.
She used to work in that hospital.
(Refers to something that she was doing in the past but now is no
longer occurring)

“USED
TO/BE USED TO” y expresiones de tipicidad
La primera pregunta que normalmente se
te ocurre cuando estas estudiando ambas expresiones es,
¿Son
similares? ¿Son sustitutas perfectas?
La
respuesta es no.
Used
to + verbo se utiliza para
costumbres/hábitos y estados que sucedían en el pasado pero no tienen
continuación en el presente.
Usamos esta forma verbal solamente
en pasado.
She used to work in that hospital
Ella solía trabajar en ese hospital.
En español la traducimos por “solía”
(Hace referencia a algo que ella hacía en
el pasado pero que ya no hace ahora en el presente)

to”
cannot be used for present or future time.
-“used
to”
no puede ser utilizado para tiempo presente o futuro.
- We use for the negative
form most
typically “didn’t use (d) to”.
-Para
construir la
negación
utilizamos normalmente “didn’t use (d) to”.
It didn’t
used to be like this.

-In
more formal styles,
to
indicate negation “used not to”
occur, though is very unusual.
-En
estilos más formales, para indicar la negación se usa “used not to”,
aunque es inusual.
That used not
to be allowed in a public building.

-The contracted form
“usedn’t to”
it is very strange to find also as it is an obsolete form.
-La
forma abreviada “usedn’t to” es
muy rara de encontrarse ya que es una forma
obsoleta.
-The interrogative form of “used to” can be implemented in
two different ways:
The most widespread form is using the
auxiliary “did”. The structure
will be as follows:
Did / subject / used to / infinitive
Did he used to eat in
that restaurant?
The second option is quite unusual and implicates subject-verb
inversion (word reversal):
When your parents were young. Used they to smoke?
(It’s so unusual that even your word corrector will
indicate it as possible grammatical mistake!)

-La forma interrogativa de “used to” puede ser implementada de
dos diferentes maneras:
La forma más extendida es usando el auxiliar “did”. La estructura será la
siguiente:
Did / sujeto / used to / infinitivo
Did he used to eat in
that restaurant?
Solía comer (él) en ese restaurant?
La segunda opción es bastante inusual y implica una inversión
de sujeto-verbo:
When your parents were young. Used they to smoke?
Cuando tus
padres eran jóvenes. ¿Solían fumar?
(Es tan inusual que incluso tu corrector de texto te lo
indicará como posible error gramatical!)

Be
used to
-Is used for expressing how familiar or easy is something for
someone.
-Can occur in any tense forms.
-Is followed by a noun phrase or a verb in the –ing form.

-Es utilizado
para expresar como de conocido o fácil es algo para alguien.
-Puede ocurrir en cualquier tiempo verbal.
-esta seguido por un sintagma nominal o
un verbo en la forma –ing.

(It’s
still difficult for me to use it)
No estoy
acostumbrado a el nuevo microondas.
(Todavía es difícil/me cuesta(para mi) usarlo)
