Los principales tipos de Conversión


What is Conversion?

Is the process that allows us to change a word from one grammatical class to another without adding any affix (prefixes or suffixes).

This process mainly produces nouns, verbs and adjectives.

The most extended use is found in producing conversion from verb to noun and from noun to verb.

Here we have four tables with the main types of conversion:

¿Qué es la conversión?

Es el proceso que nos permite cambiar una palabra de una clase gramatical a otra sin añadir ningún afijo (prefijos o sufijos).

Este proceso genera principalmente sustantivos, verbos y adjetivos.

El uso más extendido se encuentra en producir conversiones de verbos en sustantivos y sustantivos en verbos.

2) The resulting verb is expressing the action of giving the noun.

3) The resulting verb is expressing an action done with the noun as instrument.
3) El verbo resultante está expresando una acción realizada con el sustantivo como instrumento.
spade
I bought a stainless spade.

He spaded a huge hole.
glue
Adhesives are sometimes known generically as instant glues.

She has glued her trading cards in the album.
4) The resulting verb is performing the typical action of the noun.
4) El verbo resultante está realizando la acción característica del sustantivo.

The host gave a warm welcomed to all her guests.

My cousin hosted me all summer long.
5) The resulting verb is performed by means of the noun.

1) The resulting noun is expressing states of mind or feelings, which the origin verbs are expressing.
1) El sustantivo resultante está expresando estados de ánimo o sentimientos que los verbos de origen están expresando.
to doubt
He was really doubting about getting married.

2) The resulting noun is expressing an action indicated by the origin verb.
2) El sustantivo resultante está expresando una acción indicada por el verbo de origen.
to smile
During the audition try to smile.

3) The noun generated is expressing by itself the verb purpose.
3) El sustantivo generado está expresando por sí mismo la finalidad que tiene el verbo.

4) The noun is the subject of the verb in its original form.
4) El sustantivo es el sujeto del verbo en su forma de origen.
to judge
Don’t judge a book by its cover.

5) The noun indicates the place where the verb is performing its action.
5) El sustantivo indica el lugar donde el verbo está realizando su acción.

Nouns converted into adjectives                      Sustantivos convertidos en adjetivos
Some nouns when are placed in front of another noun can be acting as an adjective   (because they are describing that noun)
Algunos sustantivos cuando se sitúan delante de otro sustantivo pueden pasar a actuar como un adjetivo (ya que están describiendo ese sustantivo).
rubbish explanation, junk mail, car accident, hotel room

 

* Sometimes the same word can fit in more than one of these subcategories at the same time.

* Practising the reading use of English can be developed the necessary intuition in order to identify a conversion case.
