(I)
When the word origin (as in the verb “deceive”) ends with a silent “e”(which means that
is not pronounced), this “e” is
eliminated from the future word formed by adding the belonging suffix ,in
this case “-able” creating the
adjective “deceivable”.
We must add two
exceptions to the previous rule:
I) Final “e” is kept if comes after a soft c.
to pronounce + -able = pronounceable
II) Final “e” is kept if comes after a soft g.
to
change +able= changeable
|
(I) Cuando la palabra de origen (como en el
verbo “deceive”) termina en una “e”
sorda (lo cual significa que no se pronuncia), esta “e” se elimina de la
futura palabra a la que le añadimos el sufijo correspondiente, en este caso “-able” formando el adjetivo “deceivable”.
A esta anterior regla hay que añadirle dos
excepciones:
I)La “e” final se mantiene si viene detrás de
una c suave,
to
pronounce + -able = pronounceable
II)La e final se mantiene si viene detrás de una g suave,
to change +able= changeable
|
(II)
Double the final consonant when adding the suffix those words that fulfil the
next requirements:
-
Contain more than one syllable.
-
The stress falls on the last syllable.
-
A single vowel precedes the final consonant.
As
for example in the verb “to forget”
+ -able = forgettable
|
(III)
In those words ending by “y” with a preceding consonant, the “y” is eliminated;
it may disappear or be substituted by “i”.
If
there is a vowel before the “y” we will conserve it and there won’t be changes.
In mystery
+ ous = mysterious, the “y” is
replaced by “i”.
In misery
+ able = miserable, the “y” disappears.
In employ + -able = employable, the “y” is kept.
|
(II)
Se dobla la consonante final al añadir el sufijo en aquellas palabras que
cumplen los siguientes requisitos:
-
Contienen más de una silaba.
-
El acento recae en la última silaba.
-
La consonante final va precedida de una sola vocal.
Por ejemplo, el verbo “to forget” (olvidar) + -able = forgettable
|
(III)
En aquellas palabras que terminan en “y” con una consonante precediéndola , la
“y” queda eliminada; puede desaparecer o ser sustituida por “i”.
Si
le antecede una vocal a la “y” esta se mantiene y no habrá cambios.
En mystery + -ous = misterious , la “y” es reemplazada por “i”.
En misery + -able = miserable,
la “y” desaparece.
En employ + -able = employable , la “y” se mantiene.
